DPM-EduSeries Topic 11: Internal Plastic Coating and Holiday Testing

Welcome to another post in our DPM-EduSeries! Today we will be looking at Internal Plastic Coating and holiday testing!

Internal Plastic Coating can be applied on the drill pipe internal diameter to form a protective layer to prevent corrosion and thus extend the life span of the pipe in the drilling environment. The internal plastic coating reduces pressure loss inside the drillstring with a 15% improvement in hydraulics. There are basically 2 types of coating, namely, powder based or liquid based coating. Powder based coating are typically applied thicker than liquid based coating.

To determine if the coating is applied as per specifications, holiday test is performed.  Holiday test is a non-destructive test method applied on protective coatings to detect unacceptable discontinuities such as pinholes and voids. The test involves passing an electric current and if there is a pinhole or void, the current flows to complete the electrical circuit and an alarm will be sounded.
